  • Features

To repair paper or hinge artwork to a backing board, the archival tape preferred for this is Filmoplast Tape

Traits high tensile strength yet pliable. The pH-neutral water-activated adhesive is designed for long-term, secure adhesion.

Uses used to hinge window mats to backing boards. Also used in bookbinding and to make folders.

Material contains no starch fillers and will not flake, turn yellow, or become brittle over time

Note conservation-grade Tyvek Tape & Linen Tape should not be used directly on valuable artwork. Instructions for Application

      1. Cut the linen tape to your required size, approximately one inch short of the mat length.
      2. Lightly moisten the dry, gummed adhesive side using a clean, damp sponge or tape dispenser. Note: Depending on local conditions, use distilled or deionized water to ensure zero water impurities interact with your materials.
      3. Apply the tape firmly to the seam of your window mat and backing board.
      4. Smooth down the fabric completely to activate a secure, long-lasting bond.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Acid-Free Linen Tape to attach my artwork or prints directly to the backing board?

No. You should never apply Linen Tape directly to any original artwork, photographs, or prints. Linen tape is crafted from a heavy, high-tensile fabric weave. Because the fabric is stronger than paper, fluctuations in humidity will cause your artwork to warp or buckle under the rigid tape. Additionally, the water-activated adhesive creates an incredibly powerful bond. Removing it from a paper print can cause tearing or fiber lifting, even when water is applied.
Why is my Linen Tape not sticking?

Linen Tape features a dry, water-activated gummed adhesive. It is not a pressure-sensitive "peel-and-stick" tape. You must lightly moisten the adhesive side with a damp sponge or tape dispenser to activate the bond.

Tip: Be careful not to over-wet the tape, as flooding it can wash away the archival adhesive before it can stick to your board.
Why do you recommend distilled or deionized water to moisten the tape?

Tap water often contains minerals, chlorine, iron, and impurities from chemical treatment. Over time, these local impurities can migrate into your mat boards, causing localized staining and foxing (brown spots). Using pure distilled or deionized water ensures that your framing project remains 100% archival-safe for generations.
