Why do these terms matter?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">These are just some of the terms that are used when describing products in the photo industry . . . but what do they really mean? And why do we need to bother with them? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">As anyone with a magnetic-page photo album from the 1980s knows, the way we store our photographs matters. The cheap cardboard pages, the adhesive, and the plastic covering all give off acids that over time, deteriorate the photos\u2019 color, leave stains on the backs, and make it hard to remove photos without damaging them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">Older albums with vintage photos, photos stored in envelopes from the photo lab, and those just in a shoebox are at risk, too. And it\u2019s not just prints\u2014slides, negatives, and film reels can be damaged just from the containers they are stored in.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6918\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6918\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6918 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Many-Albums-Open-600x535.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"535\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Many-Albums-Open-600x535.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Many-Albums-Open.jpg 760w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/535;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6918\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Most old photo albums are not archival and will damage your photographs over time.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">Lignin is a naturally occurring acid that is often present in the wood pulp used to make paper. The yellowing and brittleness of old papers (especially newsprint) is due to lignin and other residual acids activated by light, humidity, and temperature in a process that often ends up destroying the paper itself. Beyond the paper, the tapes, glues, and even photo corners that were used to attach photos to album pages are off-gassing chemicals that discolor and damage photographs. The good news is there are materials that are much safer for photographs.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15941\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15941\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15941 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-Overall-Collection-front-view-copy-1-e1504622098684-600x401.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-Overall-Collection-front-view-copy-1-e1504622098684-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-Overall-Collection-front-view-copy-1-e1504622098684-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/3-Overall-Collection-front-view-copy-1-e1504622098684.jpg 794w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/401;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15941\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shoe boxes and film developing envelopes contain acids and lignins which can damage your photographs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If you are concerned about saving your family photos, you are dealing with their preservation. <strong>PRESERVATION <\/strong>is the act of preventing or neutralizing the deterioration of objects through proper storage and handling techniques. If you have photographs that are damaged and require repair, you should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.culturalheritage.org\/about-conservation\/find-a-conservator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>seek the advice of a trained conservator<\/u><\/a>. <strong>CONSERVATION <\/strong>may include the stabilization and restoration of an object.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>ARCHIVAL <\/strong>describes something that is of the quality suited to the needs of an <strong>ARCHIVE<\/strong>, an accumulation of primary source records, retained for their historic or cultural value. Museums, libraries, and art galleries are concerned with archival materials, and many photo-related products in the consumer marketplace are labeled \u201carchival.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Unfortunately, there are no official standards for what makes a material archival. However, for paper products, acid-free and lignin-free are two of the most common attributes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>ACID-FREE<\/strong> paper is made from pulp with a pH above 7 and often <strong>BUFFERED<\/strong> with calcium carbonate to neutralize acids formed with aging, or absorbed from the object.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">[<strong>UNBUFFERED<\/strong> paper, without the calcium carbonate additive, should be used for storing <u><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dye-transfer_process\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">dye transfer prints<\/a> <\/u> and <u><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cyanotype\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">cyanotypes<\/a><\/u>; their image surface can be harmed by alkalinity.]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>LIGNIN-FREE<\/strong> paper is made with less than 1% lignin content. \u201cAcid-free\u201d doesn\u2019t always mean lignin-free, so any archival-quality product you choose should specify both.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When it comes to plastic enclosures, \u201cacid-free\u201d does not apply; instead, materials should be inert and stable. Lesser quality photo storage supplies are often made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC, or vinyl). Plasticizers make this compound unstable, and it deteriorates quickly, damaging photos. Instead, look for materials made from one of these inert plastics: <strong>POLYESTER (MYLAR)<\/strong>, <strong>POLYPROPYLENE<\/strong>, and <strong>POLYETHYLENE<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Photo-safe Testing<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>PHOTO-SAFE<\/strong> is another term that is commonly used for photo albums and other photo products such as paper, plastics, and adhesives. It also has no official standard, and therefore one should not assume that it truly means what it says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Currently, the only standardized test for long-term photo-safe materials is from the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imagepermanenceinstitute.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Image Permanence Institute<\/a><\/u>, an organization dedicated to the development of best practices for preserving images and cultural heritage. Their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imagepermanenceinstitute.org\/tests\/pat.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Photographic Activity Test (PAT)<\/a> is an international standard test (ISO 18916) that explores chemical interactions between photos and a given material, such as paper, inks, adhesives, photo albums, scrapbooking supplies, framing components, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Materials passing the PAT <em>can <\/em>be considered photo-safe. However, passing the test does not indicate a material\u2019s pH or lignin content; there are also standardized tests for these.
