The &#8220;blue&#8221; version in the frame is suffering from extensive light damage caused by fluorescent lighting. The unframed &#8220;red&#8221; version of this same poster has been stored for decades in an archival storage box, and is as fresh and vibrant today as it was when these posters first came off the press in 1988.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">Light damage is real and it&#8217;s not reversible. Using ultraviolet light-filtering picture frame glazing would have helped to mitigate this damage.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Preventing Light Damage: <\/span>Causes &amp; Solutions<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">The majority of light damage is caused by ultraviolet (UV) light.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">UV light is present in sunlight (this is the cause of sun-damaged curtains and upholstery fabrics), and in fluorescent light.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Yet preventing this sort of damage is a relatively simple 2-step process.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Avoid Direct Ultraviolet and Fluorescent Lighting<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16918\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16918\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.archivalmethods.com\/category\/frames#nomobile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16918 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Light-Damage-Queen-4-lights-copy-600x457.jpg\" alt=\"Fluorescent lights damage photos and artwork\" width=\"600\" height=\"457\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Light-Damage-Queen-4-lights-copy-600x457.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Light-Damage-Queen-4-lights-copy-768x585.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Light-Damage-Queen-4-lights-copy.jpg 855w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/457;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16918\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">These two framed posters have been hung on a wall that is not exposed to direct sunlight. Instead, the real culprits in the destruction of these works are the fluorescent lights on the ceiling &#8211; the reflections of which can be seen as white bands in the glass of each framed work.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">The first and easiest way to avoid UV light exposure is to keep your framed photographs, artwork or documents out of harm&#8217;s way by placing them on walls or shelves where they will not be exposed to sunlight through windows or skylights, or to overhead fluorescent lighting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Use UV-Filtering Glass or Acrylic Glazing<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7578\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7578\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.archivalmethods.com\/product\/plexiglas-uf-5#nomobile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7578 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acrylite-and-Backing-Board-600x509.jpg\" alt=\"To prevent light damage use UV-filtering glass or acrylic when framing your artwork \" width=\"600\" height=\"509\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acrylite-and-Backing-Board-600x509.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acrylite-and-Backing-Board.jpg 760w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/509;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7578\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Optix UV-filtering acrylic glazing, with optional foam backing board.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">Even if you are diligent about &#8220;avoiding the source,&#8221; it&#8217;s often a good idea to also use &#8220;filtration.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">While there are a number sleeves and diffusers that will filter UV light emitted by fluorescent bulbs, these are generally cumbersome and expensive.
