--smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/407;\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">While a trained conservator could undoubtedly repair a great deal of this damage, the damage is part of the object&#8217;s story and has become part of the family&#8217;s history.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To keep this history intact, the book is going to be archivally <strong>preserved<\/strong> (maintained by the owner in its current state in a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archivalmethods.com\/product\/polyethylene-bags#nomobile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">safe archival bag<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">and an<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archivalmethods.com\/category\/metal-edge-boxes#nomobile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">acid-free box<\/a>),<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> but not <strong>conserved<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.culturalheritage.org\/about-conservation\/find-a-conservator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">professionally repaired by a trained conservator<\/a>).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">Here are the steps you can take to preserve books in your collection.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"> <span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">1.) Use a dry, soft, clean cloth or sable brush to g<\/span>ently clean the book before archivally storing it.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">Make sure your hands are clean and dry before you handle this project. You can opt to wear <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archivalmethods.com\/product\/white-cotton-inspection-gloves\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cotton gloves<\/a> or nitrile gloves to keep unwanted finger oils off of old artifacts and documents.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">2.)<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">Place the book in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archivalmethods.com\/product\/polyethylene-bags#nomobile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">polyethylene bag<\/a> to protect it from dust, dirt, and potential liquid spills, and just fold over any excess bag. Choosing a box that is close to the book&#8217;s size helps to keep it from sliding around during handling. If there is extra space in the box use crumpled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archivalmethods.com\/product\/archival-tissue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Archival Tissue<\/a> to cushion the book within the box.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">In the case of this book, because of the fire damage, it is best to store it by itself in order to not contaminate other books or artifacts that might be stored with it. A shelf in a closet within one&#8217;s living space is one of the best home storage locations. It&#8217;s dark and generally climate controlled. Never store valued collections in basements, attics, or garages. Temperature and humidity fluctuations are bad for artifact storage.
