font-size: 14pt;\">Genealogy. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">It&#8217;s all about family and relations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">Some are still with us (take advantage of that any way you can, and click here for the reasons why &#8211; even though it&#8217;s a bit early for the holidays). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">Yet more often it&#8217;s about those who have come before us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">While pondering this truism on a hot July morning I started to think about <strong>MY<\/strong> role in my own genealogy, and came up with a number of <strong>&#8220;I&#8221;<\/strong> thoughts (please click on each link for more information):<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20pt;\"><strong>I<\/strong><\/span> am the one doing this, because &#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20pt;\"><strong>I<\/strong><\/span> am the one in charge of old family photos \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/preserving-old-letters#nomobile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">family letters<\/a> \/ 8mm home movies \/ 35mm slides \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/preserving-toys-old-new#nomobile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">old toys<\/a> \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/postcards-archival-care-for-preservation#nomobile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">old postcards<\/a> \/ even <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/preserving-old-recipes#nomobile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">traditional family recipes(!)<\/a> in the family archive, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20pt;\"><strong>I<\/strong><\/span> am the direct beneficiary of the fruits of my labor, yet it has always been my plan to share what I learn with the rest of the family, and eventually past it on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20pt;\"><strong>I<\/strong><\/span> need to know what&#8217;s what in terms of &#8220;best practices&#8221; with regard to archival materials and procedures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20pt;\"><strong>I<\/strong><\/span> really like working on my family archive because, in this hectic world of multiple responsibilities and distractions, if I didn&#8217;t like doing it \u2013 I simply wouldn&#8217;t!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">Now, having said all this, the five facts listed above actually <strong>DO NOT<\/strong> include the three central <strong>&#8220;I&#8221;<\/strong> concepts I was thinking about as I got up this morning to start my day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">What I <strong>DO<\/strong> want to briefly share, in fact, are the following three single words that each start with the letter <strong>&#8220;I&#8221;<\/strong>, and if you are at all familiar with the ins and outs of genealogy you will certainly identify with them, too. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">Am I telling you something you already know? Well, perhaps. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 14pt;\">Yet seeing these ideas \u2013 represented in single words \u2013 will hopefully <em><strong>reinforce<\/strong><\/em> these concepts, <em><strong>reinvigorate<\/strong><\/em> your efforts, and <em><strong>reward<\/strong><\/em> your drive toward completion. Inertia<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"><span class=\"main-attr\"><strong>inertia<\/strong><em> &#8211; noun  \\  <\/em><\/span><span class=\"word-syllables\">in\u00b7er\u00b7tia  \\  <\/span><span class=\"pr\">i-\u02c8n\u0259r-sh\u0259, -sh\u0113-\u0259  \\<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"word-attributes\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u2022<\/span>  lack of movement or activity especially when movement or activity is wanted or needed<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"word-attributes\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u2022<\/span>  <span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\">a feeling of not having the energy or desire that is needed to move, change, etc.<\/span><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">This is the big one, folks, as inertia has stopped more genealogy projects than any sort of &#8220;brick walls&#8221; that are out there. Now, most genealogist know what I&#8217;m referring to in terms of &#8220;brick walls&#8221; \u2013 birth or death records that can&#8217;t be found or no longer exist \/ the shoebox full of photographs of unidentified people that one inherited from a relative, and no one else in the family knows who anybody is in the pix \/ the letter from the &#8220;old country&#8221; from an emigrating relative who fell off the face of the earth once they got here \/ the list goes on and on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Inertia, though, is the big one! You&#8217;ll be AMAZED at the treasures you find! <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(Please click on this image to see our blog on Setting Up a Great Work Space.)<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">To combat this inertia, clear out a space in the living room, guest room or someplace else in the house, set up a table or two (or commandeer the dining room table), grab all your old family photos, letters and archives, and tell the rest of your family that this is what&#8217;s what: you&#8217;re starting this project and you&#8217;re gonna see it through to the end!!! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Yes folks, by far the hardest thing about starting a new project is \u2026 actually getting <strong>STARTED!<\/strong> Yet since &#8220;there&#8217;s no time like the present,&#8221; go for it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">For more information on getting started and setting up a workspace, please see the following fully illustrated blogs on the topics. Immensity<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>immensity<\/strong> &#8211; <span class=\"main-attr\"><em>noun  \\  <\/em><\/span><span class=\"word-syllables\">im\u00b7men\u00b7si\u00b7ty  \\  <\/span><span class=\"pr\">i-\u02c8men(t)-s\u0259-t\u0113  \\<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"><span class=\"intro-colon\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u2022<\/span>  <\/span>the quality or state of being immense, large, overwhelming<br class=\"none\" \/><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"><span class=\"intro-colon\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u2022<\/span>  <\/span>something that is immense<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">This one follows closely on the heels of &#8220;Inertia,&#8221; as many folks are initially intimidated (yes, folks, you guessed it, I&#8217;m trying to cram in even MORE <strong>&#8220;I&#8221;<\/strong> words) by the sheer scope and inherent mysteries that come from piecing together one&#8217;s genealogy and family photo archives (see pix above). This immensity can lead directly to inertia, as in &#8220;yeah, it&#8217;s too big of a project, so I&#8217;ll do it later&#8221; \u2013 and &#8220;later&#8221; never arrives!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">The solution? Hey, don&#8217;t knock it till ya tried it! <br class=\"none\" \/><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(Please click on these images for more information.)<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">This can mean starting with one side of the family or the other (Mom&#8217;s family \/ Dad&#8217;s family, etc.), followed by the different types of &#8220;media&#8221; in your family archive \u2013 old loose photographs go in this pile \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/preserving-old-letters#nomobile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">family letters<\/a> go over here \/ family photo albums go over there \/ 35mm slides are their own category of things, with the same idea applied to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/preserving-wedding-dress-fabrics#nomobile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heirloom fabrics<\/a> (grandma&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/preserving-wedding-dress-fabrics#nomobile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wedding dress<\/a>, etc.) \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/preserving-toys-old-new#nomobile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">toys<\/a> (something great-grandad made for your father, etc.), the list goes on and on. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>Important Note:<\/strong> Please BE SURE that when moving stuff around you don&#8217;t loose valuable &#8220;context&#8221; that can be important to your sorting and preserving family records as to who&#8217;s who and what&#8217;s what. As an example, if both Mom&#8217;s and Dad&#8217;s families made 35mm slides back in the day, and Mom&#8217;s slides are with Mom&#8217;s family&#8217;s stuff \/ Dad&#8217;s with his, <strong>DON&#8217;T<\/strong> co-mingle everything into a huge pile of slides in the middle. Keep Dad&#8217;s family&#8217;s slides with &#8220;Dad&#8217;s Family Stuff,&#8221; and keep Mom&#8217;s family&#8217;s slides with &#8220;Mom&#8217;s Family Stuff&#8221; (see pix below). Impermanence<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>impermanence<\/strong> &#8211; <span class=\"main-attr\"><em>noun  \\  <\/em><\/span><span class=\"word-syllables\">im\u00b7per\u00b7ma\u00b7nence  \\  <\/span><span class=\"pr\">im-\u02c8p\u0259rm-n\u0259n(t)s, -\u02c8p\u0259r-m\u0259-  \\<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000; font-size: 14pt;\">\u2022<\/span>  not lasting forever<br class=\"none\" \/><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000; font-size: 14pt;\">\u2022<\/span>  not permanent \/ transient<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">So, I&#8217;m writing this short piece as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.archivalmethods.com\/series\/american-family-archives#nomobile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Archival Methods&#8217; series of informative blogs<\/a>. Now, the goals of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archivalmethods.com\/blog#nomobile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">90+ blogs<\/a> I have written thus far are based on educating \/ explaining \/ illustrating <strong>EVERYTHING<\/strong> that goes into the archival storage and presentation of family artifacts, photographs, artworks, collectibles, and everything else worth safely saving \/ storing \/ displaying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Well, right now I&#8217;ll wager that you think I&#8217;m using the word &#8220;impermanence&#8221; as it applies to the <strong>physical &#8220;stuff&#8221;<\/strong> you&#8217;re looking to preserve. By this I mean to say that &#8220;acid-free&#8221; storage and presentation materials exist to help preserve physical &#8220;stuff&#8221; that might otherwise be &#8220;impermanent&#8221; \u2013 as such stuff might suffer and deteriorate over time because it is not being archivally preserved correctly. Of key importance in this exercise was the idea of asking different family members the fundemental <strong>who \/ what \/ where \/ when<\/strong> questions as they apply to family history \/ family photos. Quite often the very <strong>BEST<\/strong> genealogy resource for your particular family is sitting right next to you at the holiday dinner table! Since memories are fleeting things (and thus impermanent), and nobody lives forever (ditto), take every chance you get to show your photos and photo albums to family members, and take notes! Someday you&#8217;ll be <strong>VERY<\/strong> glad you did!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">So, I&#8217;ve got another dozen or so words that start with the letter <strong>&#8220;I&#8221;<\/strong> that apply to genealogy that I would like to share with you (Important \/ Irreplaceable \/ Intrinsically Interesting \/ etc.), but I&#8217;ll have to save those for another blog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">In the meantime, please remember that focusing on <strong>&#8220;I&#8221;<\/strong> when it comes to genealogy is about more than just <strong>&#8220;you,&#8221;<\/strong> the genealogist who&#8217;s reading this right now.
