Save a Photo, Save a Memory – Weekend of Remembrance
September is Save Your Photos Month!
Save Your Photos Month is an international event created to educate the public about the importance of restoring, safeguarding and archivally preserving photos, documents and other precious items.
This September also marks the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.
To mark these occasions, Archival Methods is pleased to participate, along with a number of other related companies and organizations (see list below), in Save a Photo, Save a Memory – Weekend of Remembrance here in the Rochester, NY, area (our hometown).
Over the course of the weekend we’ll join with these companies and organizations in offering the Rochester community free photo scanning, restoration, and important information on easy-to-do photo archiving and preservation.
First, a little background….
It’s a somber fact that almost every day newspapers, television news, and web-based news organizations have a story of tragic loss due to fires, floods, hurricanes, tornados and other natural and man-made disasters including, unfortunately, terrorism (more on that below).
Nothing compares to the heartache of watching or reading about individuals, families, and sometimes entire communities that are struggling with the aftermath of such events.
While such stories are universally tragic, there are also glimmering moments of hope and pride in humanity when we read about or see local heroes – often in the form of first responders, medical professionals, and men & women in uniform – who rise to the occasion to help their fellow citizens in their hour of greatest need, many times putting themselves at great risk.
To these often anonymous individuals go our collective thanks, as they truly are the greatest examples of our “better selves.”

While the protection of life and limb is always the first priority (with a collective “thank you” to first responders everywhere!), not far from the top of many people’s list of things they want to try
and salvage are their irreplaceable family photos. (Please click on either image for more information.)
While NOTHING compares to the importance of preserving lives, limbs, or homes, news interviews with survivors often report that the FIRST things that a family recovering from a devastating fire, flood or other disaster looks to retrieve from the wreckage are their family photographs and snapshots (see postcard image above).
From the outside this might seem like a curious thing to do, yet if you think about it for a moment practically EVERYTHING in one’s damaged or destroyed home can be replaced: the furniture, the clothes, the appliances, and so on.
This, however, is NOT the case with family photographs, as more often than not once these precious images are lost they are gone forever.
Yet what is also tragic is that many of our cherished and irreplaceable family photographs can be lost or destroyed WITHOUT having suffered any of the larger disasters mentioned above.
In the long run, perhaps an even greater overall threat to family photos is seen in the smaller-scale acts of inadvertent neglect, incorrect storage procedures, even the seemingly innocuous act of storing family photographs in an attic or basement, which can lead to the destruction of precious family photographs when something as common as a leaky roof, a leaky water pipe, or a leaky water heater occurs (see pix above).
All of this brings us to the point of this short blog, as this September during Save Your Photos Month Archival Methods is partnering with a number of other photo-preservation organizations and companies to do TWO things:
• To help members of our community learn how to preserve their cherished family photos and snapshots
• To take a moment to share more information on some of the heroic work done – often behind the scenes –
by our first responders, our medical professionals, and our active duty and veteran men & women in uniform
Save a Photo, Save a Memory – Weekend of Remembrance: What It’s All About
As mentioned, Save Your Photos Month is an international event created to educate the public about the importance of restoring, safeguarding and archivally preserving photos, documents and other precious items.
The theme and timing of this year’s Save a Photo, Save a Memory – Weekend of Remembrance is in commemoration of the 15th anniversary of September 11, 2001.
During the weekend of September 9th through 11th, all of the participating partners will join in honoring our local heroes and the families of those who serve and protect our citizens every day – first-responders including police, firefighters and EMTs / the medical community of doctors and nurses / and current & veteran members of the United States Armed Forces – by engaging in a number of free events in locations that represent these groups:
• Rochester Academy of Medicine – representing the medical community of doctors, nurses & support staff
(Archival Methods will be on hand on Friday, September 9th, from 5:00-8:00pm)
• Greece Historical Society – representing our active & veteran armed services
(Archival Methods will be on hand on Saturday, September 10th, from 10:00am-4:00pm)
• Henrietta Ambulance – representing first responders and EMTs
(Archival Methods will be on hand on Sunday, September 11th, from 10:00am-4:00pm)
Hosts at each location will also be there to provide attendees with information on their services to the community, and to conduct tours of their facilities.

Each day the Save Your Photos partners will provide free scanning and restoration for up to 50 of your precious photos or 35mm slides at these locations, with local experts demonstrating software to restore photos or documents and offering advice on how to organize and safely archive your originals.

Admission is free and includes:
• Scanning of up to 50 photos or slides per person with Kodak Alaris scanners
• Photo restoration of up to 10 photos with Vivid-Pix RESTORE software

• Informative tours by Henrietta Ambulance, the Rochester Academy of Medicine,

Q: What is the event?
A: Save a Photo, Save a Memory – Weekend of Remembrance
In observance of the 15th anniversary of September 11, 2001, a weekend of events will honor and give thanks to those who protect us and keep us safe and well every day – first responders, the medical community, and active duty & veteran members of our armed forces. The educational events are free (and fun!), and will help you understand scanning, restoration, and the organization and archival preservation of photos and documents. In addition, these events will provide public exposure to important non-profit host organizations that work to keep us all safe and well.
Q: What is Save Your Photos?
A: Save Your Photos is a public service outreach campaign developed by the Association of Personal Photo Organizers (APPO.org) to teach individuals how to preserve life’s irreplaceable photos, films & videos, and letters & documents before they are lost due to accidents, natural disasters, or unintended neglect.
Q: What will I learn at these events?
A: At these events you will:
• Learn about photo & document organizing, restoration, and archival storage
• Receive free scans of up to 50 photos / documents / and slides
• Learn about software to restore your photos & documents, and have up to 10 restorations
done on your images or documents
Q: Why are you holding these events at service facilities like the ambulance and medical academy buildings?
A: Event locations at the host organizations provide an opportunity to expose our community to the people and groups that protect and keep us well such as first responders, medical professionals, and active / veteran armed forces.
Q: Are there differences between the Friday, Saturday or Sunday events?
A: The event format at each venue is the same, but each venue provides a unique look into the facilities that are hosting the event.

Q: Why is the weekend of September 11th significant?
A: On September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan, 2,753 people were killed when hijacked American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 were intentionally crashed into the North and South towers. Of those who perished during the initial attacks and the subsequent collapses of the towers, 403 were first responders – FDNY firefighters / NYPD police officers / Port Authority officers / EMTs – and the medical community provided immediate and sustained ambulance service, triage and critical care for thousands of injured New Yorkers. They were our heroes on that tragic day in America.
